MP condemns Israel's attacks

December 29, 2008 12:00 AM

Israel's aerial bombing of Palestianians living in The Gaza Strip has been condemned by Colchester's Liberal Democrat MP Bob Russell.

"Whatever the provocation claimed by Israel, the response is disproportionate. Mass bombing leading to the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians cannot be justified."

Mr Russell said that there could not be peace in the Middle East while Israel continued to occupy Palestinian land and build new settlements in contravention of United Nations resolutions.

He said that the democratic world was failing the Palestinian people by not stopping Israel's aggression. "Whatever happened to the so-called Road Map for Peace in the Middle East? Israel has torn it up!

"And what is the Special Envoy for Peace in the Middle East doing to stop Israel? Whatever Tony Blair has done, it has clearly failed."

Mr Russell added that he also blamed American President George Bush for the military action by Israel. "The Americans have largely armed Israel, and the pro-Israeli influence is very strong in the USA as well as in Britain."

If you are a resident of the Colchester constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
