Prime Minister welcomes Colchester Soldiers to No.10

January 7, 2009 12:00 AM

Prime Minister Gordon Brown this morning (Wednesday) welcomed 55 members of the 2nd Battalion of The Parachute Regiment to 10 Downing Street - and, in a moving speech in the Cabinet Room, he thanked them on behalf of the nation for their service in Afghanistan last year.

The soldiers, all members of The Sergeants' and Warrant Officers' Mess at Merville Barracks, were accompanied by Colchester MP Bob Russell. This is the fourth group from 16 Air Assault Brigade whom Mr Russell has welcomed for a visit to the House of Commons, and three of these groups have now had the bonus of going to 10 Downing Street for photographs and to meet the Prime Minister.

After their visit to No.10 the group laid a wreath at The Cenotaph accompanied by Mr Russell and the Secretary of State for Defence, the Rt Hon John Hutton MP. A group photograph was later taken on the House of Commons Terrace overlooking the River Thames.

If you are a resident of the Colchester constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
