Shopmobility, the scheme whereby people with mobility problems can use mechanised wheelchairs to go shopping in Colchester Town Centre, may not now have to cut back on its hours of operation following a reduction in funding from Colchester Borough Council.
Town MP Bob Russell today revealed that the North Essex Primary Care Trust was set to make a financial contribution which should enable the scheme to continue at the same or broadly similar level as before.
Mr Russell said that he had had a meeting with the Chief Executive of the Trust, Dr Paul Zollinger-Read, when he raised the matter. "I am delighted that the Trust has responded in such a positive way. I cannot be sure at this stage whether it will be business as usual for Shopmobility, but clearly the injection of funds from the Trust will ensure that the service will not be affected to the level it would have been following the reduction in funding from the Borough Council."
He added: "It is obviously disappointing that there has been this period of uncertainty. I have been contacted by Shopmobility users, and I know they will be delighted with this announcement.
"From what I have now been told it looks as if the outcome for users will be virtually unchanged. I am grateful to both the Trust and Council Officers who have worked in partnership to achieve this good news."
Shopmobility was established when Mr Russell was Leader of Colchester Borough Council.
