Colchester MP Bob Russell played a leading role in today's historic House of Commons victory for former Gurkha soldiers.
With a Bill he presented last May, a direct challenge to Prime Minister Gordon Brown in November, the Tabling in December of the very first Motion of the current Parliamentary year, and his membership of the Home Affairs Select Committee on which he serves, Liberal Democrat Mr Russell has been involved in every stage of the Parliamentary battle on behalf of Gurkhas who retired from the British Army before 1997.
And Mr Russell even played a cameo role in the actual defeat of the Government - he was the "sweeper" in the Aye lobby, with responsibility to ensure that all those supporting the Motion actually voted. The Motion was Tabled by the Liberal Democrats.
Shortage of time restricted the number of MPs who were able to speak in the debate, but Mr Russell was able to make a brief intervention.
Mr Russell is Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Gurkha Rights. He is also co-sponsor of a second Motion, Tabled on Tuesday this week and published this morning, in support of the Gurkhas.
Last September Mr Russell was the keynote speaker at a fringe meeting in support of the Gurkhas held at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference .
