Figures just published by the House of Commons Library reveal that Colchester MP Bob Russell has - for the 12th consecutive year! - registered the best voting attendance record of any Opposition MP in the whole country.

At 86 per cent, Liberal Democrat Mr Russell is comfortably ahead of all the Conservative MPs in Essex with the top Tory being Chelmsford West MP Simon Burns on 69 per cent.

The lowest attendance from any of the County's 17 MPs were registered jointly by Brentwood and Ongar MP Eric Pickles, Chairman of the Conservative Party, and Harlow Labour MP Bill Rammell, who is a Defence Minister. Both were present for just 39 per cent of the votes.

The figures relate to voting attendances by all the country's 646 Members of Parliament for the 2008-09 Parliamentary Session which ran from 3rd December last year to 12th November this year.

Full figures of attendances for Essex MPs, as published by the House of Commons, are as follows:-

Conservative MPs: Simon Burns (Chelmsford West) 69%; James Duddridge (Rochford and Southend East) 69%; Bernard Jenkin (North Essex) 63%; John Baron (Billericay) 58%; David Amess (Southend West) 57%; John Whittingdale (Maldon and Chelmsford East) 56%; Brooks Newmark (Braintree) 55%; Mrs Eleanor Laing (Epping Forest) 54%; Mark Francois (Rayleigh) 52%; Douglas Carswell (Harwich) 50%; Eric Pickles (Brentwood and Ongar) 39%.

Two of the County's three Labour MPs are Ministers - Angela Smith (Basildon) and Bill Rammell (Harlow). Their respective voting attendance figures were 85% and 39%. Thurrock Labour MP Andrew Mackinlay registered 75%.

Castle Point MP Bob Spink, formerly a Conservative but now sitting as an Independent, scored 56%.

Liberal Democrat - Bob Russell (Colchester) 86 per cent.

Sir Alan Haselhurst, Conservative MP for Saffron Walden, does not vote because he is Deputy Speaker.

If you are a resident of the Colchester constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
