Bob Russell welcomes plans to cut taxes for Colchester workers

December 1, 2009 5:49 PM

Bob Russell has welcomed Liberal Democrat ideas to bring in a fairer tax system, meaning no-one will pay a penny's tax on the first £10,000 they earn each year. The proposals give every working person a £700 tax cut - £1,400 less tax a year for every working couple.

Pensioners will each receive a £100 tax cut. And 4 million of the poorest people will be taken out of paying income tax completely. The cuts would be paid for by closing tax loopholes for the super-rich.

Bob Russell commented: "These proposals from my colleague Vince Cable are in stark contrast to the Conservative's tax proposals which would only help their super-rich friends. Our tax cuts would benefit all workers in Colchester, giving people much needed relief in these tough times."

The Liberal Democrats will also replace council tax with a local income tax, based on people's ability to pay. Money raised locally will be spent locally.

Bob Russell added: "Council tax is hugely unfair, and made worse by the fact that the money is spent by unaccountable bureaucrats in Whitehall.

"Liberal Democrat plans would see Council tax raised in Colchester spent in Colchester. Tied in with the Liberal Democrat campaign locally for Colchester to pull away from the County Council in Chelmsford, this will mean that decisions on how our money is spent will be taken by local people who understand our area".

If you are a resident of the Colchester constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
