Politicians representing three levels of government have joined forces to support a campaign to improve road safety for pupils attending Brinkley Grove Primary School at Highwoods, Colchester.
Town MP Bob Russell is working in partnership with Highwoods Borough Councillor Gerard Oxford and County Councillor Anne Turrell who represents the area on Essex County Council to deal with serious parking problems outside the school caused by parents and others dropping off and picking up pupils.
The three have been presented with a Petition organised by local residents Ms Mandy Newman and Mr Christopher Mawson who is also the School's Caretaker. On behalf of the local community, and Councillors Oxford and Turrell, Mr Russell has now written to Essex County Highways to request a school-time parking ban in the vicinity and for the Police to deal with drivers who cause an obstruction.
Mr Russell, who is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Road Safety Group, said: "Regrettably, inconsiderate behaviour by a minority of drivers who insist on parking where they should not is putting children at serious risk of injury or worse. As they clearly have no commonsense towards the safety of children it is necessary for us to ask for strong measures to deal with their anti-social attitude."
He added: "Such problems are not confined to Brinkley Grove School. Similar situations occur elsewhere. If other groups of parents want to involve me and their local Councillors in trying to get matters sorted out, then I would be pleased to hear from them."
Mr Russell said that it was to the obvious advantage of the local community when the MP, Borough Councillors for the area and the County Councillor were working jointly to achieve a positive outcome.
