PRIME MINISTER AGREES TO LOOK AT VAT IMPACT ON CHARITIES AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS

July 14, 2010 5:40 PM

Colchester MP Bob Russell today asked of the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon David Cameron MP, how charities and voluntary organisations can have the soon-to-be-implemented increased in VAT refunded to them?

In his response the Prime Minister promised to look at the issue. He also damned the former Labour Government for titling charities as the "third sector". Mr Cameron called for charities to now be called the "first sector" in recognition of the important role they play.

Mr Russell's question to the Prime Minister is part of his on-going opposition to the increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20% which is due to come into affect next January. His question was today at 12.14pm during Prime Ministers Question Time.

If you are a resident of the Colchester constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
