Following further incidents of lorries getting stuck in the narrow streets of Colchester's historic Dutch Quarter, Town MP Sir Bob Russell has suggested that warning signs should be painted on the road surface in St Peter's Street.
"It is clear that some lorry drivers are not noticing the signs on posts saying that they should not be going in that direction, but they could hardly miss a painted outline of a lorry on the road with a large diagonal red cross painted over it.
"Such a sign on the road surface at the St peter's Street'/short Cut Road junction, and then repeated outside the Castle Park gates before drivers get to Maidenburgh Street, would hopefully provide a sufficient visual warning not to proceed any further.
Sir Bob, a former Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Road Safety Group, also proposes that a central island refuge should be installed at the entrance from Middleborough into St Peter's Street which he said would provide an initial visual warning to lorry drivers as well as helping pedestrians to cross in greater safety this wide and busy junction which has been the scene of a fatality in the past.
He has written to Essex County Highways to request that they consider his suggestions in the hope that they will prevent further costly incidences of lorry drivers taking a wrong turning and getting their vehicles stuck in the Dutch Quarter.
