Syria – don’t forget Israel says Sir Bob

February 6, 2012 11:13 AM

With the eyes of the world on the major clashes in Syria, Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell told the House of Commons this afternoon that it was important that the plight of Palestinians living in territory occupied by Israel should not be overlooked.

Sir Bob - a passionate supporter of the rights of Palestinians - pointed out that Israel was operating in defiance of United Nations Resolutions and International Law.

He thanked Foreign Secretary William Hague for the stance he had taken at the UN in demanding that the Syrian Government ceased attacking its own people, and said that he welcomed Mr Hague's warm words of praised for the nations of The Arab League who had been heavily involved in seeking a unanimous vote to call on Syria to stop the bloodshed. Unfortunately the Resolution was blocked with vetoes by both Russia and China.

Last month Liberal Democrat Sir Bob met the President of the Palestinian Authority during a visit to the House of Commons. Last year Sir Bob visited Israel/Palestine, meeting Palestinians living on the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem which has been annexed by Israel.
