Essex MPs clash over City of Culture

February 14, 2013 12:59 PM
Essex MPs Sir Bob Russell and David Amess had a friendly St Valentine's Day clash in the House of Commons this morning as they both argued why their constituency should be named 2017 City of Culture.
Southend West MP Mr David Amess had a Question to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport asking when the decision would be announced. He explained why Southend should get the accolade.
This prompted Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell to point out that since Colchester was clearly the cultural capital of Essex then the honour should go to Colchester.
Cultural Minister Mr Ed Vaizey MP wisely acknowledged that both Colchester and Southend had their own distinctive claims for cultural attributes.
