The Liberal Democrats exist at Essex University to bring like-minded people together and campaign for a better world. We are a group of Essex students who support and are interested in the Liberal Democrat Party. Essex Liberal Youth supports a party that stands for a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. The Liberal Democrats have had a significant presence at Essex University for a number of years, and there are a lot of young Liberal Democrats in Colchester. Many former Lib Dem activists at the University have gone on to greater things in the party, such as local Councillors Mark Cory, Jon Manning and Gary Scott, and former Westminster and European Parliamentary candidate Jonathan Bramall. Essex Liberal Youth is an incredibly active political society with regular meets including 'pizza and politics' meetings to discuss topical issues, panel discussions with guest speakers, visits to Parliament and action days that involve helping out the Liberal Democrats locally with campaigning. The recent formation of the government coalition between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives has been the cause of much heated debate both within the party and among its supporters. We welcome all views on this issue and hope to provide a forum for discussion on this important topic. Membership of the society is just £1.50 for SU members, and can be done on the SU website. We also have a lot of younger members in the local party, including some of our Councillors! We regularly meet up in town to catch up, so if you'd like to come along, please email libdem@essex.ac.uk
