Schh - MP wants to keep things quiet

Today, Wednesday 25th April, is International Noise Awareness Day. And to mark the occasion Colchester MP Bob Russell - who is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Noise Awareness Group - has tabled a Motion in the House of Commons which calls on the Government to promote measures to tackle the growing problem and nuisance of noise in society.

Mr Russell has in the past even had a Parliamentary debate on the menace of noise and the increasing number of anti-social behaviour problems caused by noisy neighbours who show lack of consideration for the interests of others.

His Motion notes that this is the 12th year that International Noise Awareness Day has been held, and praises the work of the UK Noise Association which is a coalition of organisations who lobby on different aspects of noise and works to tackle the growth of "nuisances and problems caused by unnecessary noise."

The Motion goes on to praise the UK Noise Association for the launch today of a new publication - a "Quite Guide" - that provides tips on how to turn down the volume in our lives, and calls on the Government "to promote care and consideration so that everybody can all enjoy more peaceful times."

Liberal Democrat Mr Russell added: "There is place for noise - for example, the applause at the end of a concert, the sound of children enjoying life, the roar of the waves against rocks, and the cheers each time Colchester United score!. Sadly, however, there are many other noises in modern life which cause distress to others. I have received a large number of complaints at my Advice Bureau about noise-related issues."
