Bob Russell

Road safety honour for Colchester MP

2.39.22pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 31st May 2007

The work of Colchester MP Bob Russell as one of Parliament's leading road safety campaigners has led to him being honoured as "Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month".

The accolade has been made by road safety charity group "Brake" which campaigns for improvements to road safety legislation, enforcement and for better care services for road crash victims.

Mr Russell is joint Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Road Safety. His specific work in promoting the need for more roads policing, monitoring of in-vehicle information systems and highlighting the UN Global Road Safety Week were cited by Brake as reasons for making him "Parliamentarian of the Month".

The award coincides with Mr Russell's leading role in the local campaign to secure a lower speed limit on Clingoe Hill following the tragic deaths in the past year of two students killed while crossing the busy dual-carriage.
